Chapter 8 - WHAT LILY RECORDED
The first clear words were Lily’s.
“Grandma, my tongue hurts.”
Patricia answered, impatient and close to the microphone. “You had one bite. Sit still.”
Then Daniel’s voice.
“Where’s the bag?”
Patricia: “I put it away.”
Lily again, weaker. “Dad, I need the pen.”
Claire laughed softly somewhere behind the phone.
“She always knows how to make it about herself.”
The next section was worse because of how ordinary it sounded.
Water glasses setting down. Boat lines knocking against dock posts. One of Claire’s boys asking for chips. Patricia complaining that Rebecca was “already hysterical by text.” Daniel saying, “Mom, just show me the pen.” Patricia answering, “Stop panicking. If we stab her now, your marriage is over and the whole day goes with it.”
Then came Rebecca’s voice tinny through speakerphone:
“Use the pen and call 911!”
Patricia, farther away: “You are not going to hijack this day—”
The line disconnected.
Several minutes passed under a confusion of movement and Lily’s strained breathing.
Then Daniel again, more frightened now.
“Lily, look at me.”
And Patricia, still maddeningly calm.
“She’s breathing.”
Claire: “If you call an ambulance, Rebecca will use it in court. Think.”
That sentence ended Daniel.
You could hear it even in the audio—the instant his fear stopped being about Lily’s body and became about what kind of man he would sound like if he kept listening.
The last clear part before paramedics arrived was Lily whispering, “Dad, please don’t let me die.”
Rebecca stopped the recording there.
No one in the room moved.
Patricia had gone from defensive to brittle. Claire looked like someone trying to assemble a new lie out of air.
Daniel sat down without meaning to.
The nurse quietly took the phone from Rebecca long enough to note the existence of the recording and notify the hospital social worker.

Three hours earlier, Lily had begged the adults in her life to choose her over convenience.
Now the evidence sat in a pediatric emergency room and could no longer be argued away.
