Chapter 7 - THE HOSPITAL BAG

Back in the ER, Rebecca pulled Lily’s phone from the clear belongings bag just as Patricia reached across Daniel to stop her.

This time a nurse entered fast enough to see the grab.

Then came security.

Then another nurse guiding Lily’s bed slightly back while telling everyone to step away.

The physical chaos ended quickly. The emotional one did not.

Rebecca stood beside the bed, one cheek red from Claire’s slap, the untouched EpiPen in one hand and Lily’s phone in the other.

Daniel’s face had gone hollow.

He looked at the intact safety cap, then at his mother.

“You said you checked it.”

Patricia’s mouth opened, but nothing convincing came out.

Claire tried first.

“Maybe the hospital replaced it.”

The nurse, who had already read the intake notes, said flatly, “Belongings were bagged as received.”

No one spoke for several seconds.

Rebecca unlocked Lily’s phone with a code only mother and daughter shared. She did not know exactly what she would find. Only that Lily had been old enough—and frightened enough—to do what children do when adults stop feeling safe.

A voice memo app sat open.

Recording length: 2 hours, 51 minutes.

Rebecca looked at Daniel once.

Then pressed play.

The room filled with Lily’s own breathing.
