Chapter 11 - THE FIRST THINGS THAT FELL APART
Within hours, the family’s structure began cracking in ordinary, procedural ways.
The hospital social worker filed an emergency child-safety report.
Security preserved footage from the ER showing Patricia shoving Rebecca and Claire slapping her.
The police officer took statements from Rebecca, Daniel, the nurse, and two visitors in the hallway who heard enough of the confrontation to confirm what they saw.
No one was dragged out in handcuffs.
Real collapse rarely looks theatrical.
It looks administrative.
Patricia was told she was not permitted further contact with Lily in the hospital without staff approval.
Claire shouted that this was absurd and nearly got herself escorted out.
Daniel left the room twice to take phone calls and came back looking older each time. His mother alternated between fury and panic. Claire blamed Rebecca, then Daniel, then the dock attendant, then “today’s lawsuit culture.”
By evening, Rebecca’s attorney had filed an emergency motion restricting unsupervised contact pending a custody review.
Rebecca had not planned to use courts so fast.
The note in Lily’s backpack changed that.
So did the recording.
When the hospital social worker asked whether Rebecca believed Lily would be safe if Daniel took her home after discharge, Rebecca answered with no hesitation.
“No.”
