Chapter 12 - WHAT PATRICIA WAS REALLY PROTECTING
The next truth surfaced forty-eight hours later, after Lily was stable enough to go home and Rebecca was stable enough to ask the question that had been bothering her from the first recording.
Why had Patricia been so desperate not to call 911?
Embarrassment alone did not fully explain it.
The answer came from one of Claire’s own text messages, preserved on the family group thread because Claire had forgotten Rebecca still saw it before being removed:
If medics come out here in front of the members, they’ll pull my guest privileges for the rest of the season.
Claire’s “luxury lake day” had not been casual family fun.
It had been her chance to impress a private-club board member whose referral she needed for a new event-planning contract. Patricia knew that. She also knew her daughter’s finances were a mess after a failed boutique. The whole day had been engineered to look like competence, elegance, family ease.
Lily’s reaction threatened the performance.
Patricia had not merely wanted to avoid inconvenience. She wanted to avoid public embarrassment for Claire.
Claire, in turn, did not want an ambulance on the dock because it would ruin the image she was selling.
And Daniel—caught between his mother’s certainty, his sister’s panic, and his own fear that Rebecca would finally leave—chose delay long enough for all of it to become almost unforgivable.
The revelation did not make Patricia more sympathetic.
It made her smaller.
