Chapter 9 - The Plan Required Me to Break

Owen reconstructed what should have happened.

The tender was supposed to remain hidden behind the yacht’s port quarter.

Lily’s rescue capsule would stay tethered by a dark retrieval line.

Claire would scream that Lily had fallen.

Daniel would reach the rail and see only flashes of the red raincoat.

After approximately ninety seconds, Owen believed the tender crew was expected to “discover” Lily and bring her back.

Owen had never approved that sequence.

Claire had described it to different crew members in fragments.

Nobody realized the full picture.

The deckhand thought it was a rescue drill.

The first mate thought Claire was testing Daniel’s emergency response.

Owen believed Daniel knew.

Claire had separated information so nobody would question the whole.

That was deliberate.

The wider consequences followed.

The yacht’s management company suspended Owen and reviewed crew procedures.

Owen accepted responsibility for trusting the owner’s spouse without verifying Daniel’s approval.

Daniel felt guilty.

Owen had worked for him eight years.

“This shouldn’t cost you your career.”

Owen answered, “I should’ve called you twice.”

Again, nobody was completely innocent.

But responsibility was not equal.

Lily continued therapy.

She began refusing baths if water splashed near her face.

She panicked when thunderstorms started.

She stopped wearing the red raincoat.

Daniel placed it in a storage box without asking whether she wanted to keep it.

Then his business CFO, Mark Ellison, called.

“You need to know Claire contacted me.”

Daniel’s stomach tightened.

“When?”

“August twenty-sixth.”

The day before the storm.

“What did she want?”

“She asked what would happen financially if you suffered a severe emotional event.”

Daniel frowned.

Mark continued.

“She asked whether the board could force you to take leave.”

Daniel stood.

“Why?”

“I thought she was worried about your stress.”

“What did you tell her?”

“That the board could recommend medical leave, but nobody could remove you casually.”

Daniel felt the entire story shift.

Claire had not only been trying to scare him into selling Maribel.

She had been asking what would happen if the scare broke him badly enough that he could not work.
