Daniel began therapy too.
He hated the idea at first.
Then he realized he had spent months demanding that everyone else examine their choices.

His therapist asked why Claire had not known how serious the company’s finances were.
“I didn’t want her worried.”
“You mean you made the decision about what she was allowed to worry about.”
Daniel did not like that sentence.
It was accurate.
He had also refused to discuss selling Maribel because he believed grief made the issue untouchable.
Claire had lived inside decisions she could question but never influence.
Again, none of that excused her.
Understanding context was not forgiveness.
It was simply refusing to tell himself a cleaner story than the one that happened.
Lily’s recovery moved unevenly.
She could walk along the marina with Daniel.
She could not board a boat.
She loved watching gulls.
She hated hearing dock lines snap against metal.
One afternoon she asked him, “Did Claire want me gone?”
Daniel crouched beside her.
“No.”
“Then why did she push me?”
He chose his words carefully.
“She wanted to scare me so I would make decisions she wanted.”
Lily frowned.
“That’s mean.”
“Yes.”
“Did it work?”
Daniel looked at Maribel across the harbor.
“In some ways.”
He had reduced business spending.
Opened discussions with the acquisition group again.
Listed several nonessential assets.
But he refused to sell Maribel merely because Claire had tried to force him.
He also refused to keep it merely to prove she had failed.
For once, he postponed the decision until it belonged to him and Lily again.
Meanwhile, the legal consequences advanced.
Claire faced potential charges related to child endangerment and false representations to the crew.
Her attorney negotiated.
Nothing happened overnight.
No dramatic arrest.
No instant courtroom collapse.
But the possibility became real.
Claire’s interior-design clients began hearing rumors.
Daniel said nothing publicly.
He did not need to.
The investigation existed without his revenge.
