Chapter 8 - I Refused to Protect Claire From the Consequences

Daniel authorized investigators to receive the relevant yacht logs.

He also instructed his attorney not to negotiate secrecy.

Claire’s attorney had floated the possibility of resolving the marital separation privately if Daniel agreed not to discuss the incident beyond legally necessary channels.

Daniel refused.

Not because he wanted publicity.

He wanted no publicity at all.

He simply would not sign anything that made protecting Claire’s reputation part of protecting Lily.

Their marriage separation became formal.

Claire moved permanently into her Newport apartment.

Daniel changed household access codes.

Owen removed her from the yacht’s authorized guest list.

Lily stayed with Daniel.

The investigation did not move quickly.

That frustrated him.

But the slower pace prevented something worse—people making conclusions before the evidence was complete.

Daniel also made a financially painful decision.

He put Maribel into inactive status.

No private trips.

No recreational sailing.

Minimal crew.

Maintenance only.

It saved money.

It also removed the object Claire had turned into a battleground.

Lily noticed immediately.

“Are we never going again?”

“I don’t know.”

“Because of Claire?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Because right now the boat doesn’t feel safe to us.”

Lily considered that.

“Boats don’t do bad things.”

Daniel looked at her.

“No.”

“People do.”

He nodded.

That night Daniel received a call from Claire.

It was the first direct conversation they had in weeks.

“You’re making me sound like I tried to kill her.”

“I’ve made no public statement.”

“You’re giving them everything.”

“Yes.”

“I protected her.”

“You terrified her.”

“She was never going to drown.”

“You didn’t get to decide what fear would do to her.”

Claire started crying.

Then she said something Daniel had not heard before.

“It was only supposed to last ninety seconds.”

Daniel went silent.

“Ninety seconds until what?”

Claire realized immediately.

“Nothing.”

“Claire.”

She hung up.

Daniel stared at the phone.

Ninety seconds.

Not ten.

Not the brief terror he experienced before the tender appeared.

Claire had planned for him to believe Lily was gone for a minute and a half.

And somewhere inside those missing eighty seconds was the real purpose of the stunt.
