Chapter 5 - The Boat Wasn’t the Only Thing Claire Wanted Gone
Daniel began remembering conversations he had ignored.
Claire asking whether Hannah’s photographs needed to stay in the yacht’s salon.
Claire suggesting they rename Maribel.
Claire complaining that every summer trip somehow became a story about something Hannah once did.
Once, after Daniel showed Lily how her mother used to tie a bowline knot, Claire left dinner early.
Daniel had found her sitting alone below deck.
“You married me,” she said.
“I know.”
“Sometimes I don’t think this family does.”
He had defended himself.
He told her Hannah was Lily’s mother and would always matter.
He told Claire memory was not competition.
All of that was true.
It was also incomplete.
Daniel rarely noticed when Claire was excluded from rituals he and Lily had built before she arrived.
He expected her to fit herself into a life already designed.
That did not excuse what she did.
But it explained part of the resentment she had never learned to express honestly.
Then the financial side surfaced.
Daniel’s accountant called about year-end planning.
During the conversation, he mentioned that Claire had contacted him six weeks earlier.
“She asked how much liquidity you’d free up by selling Maribel.”
Daniel went quiet.
“What did you tell her?”
“Nothing confidential. I told her to discuss your personal assets with you.”
“Did she mention why?”
“She said you were under more pressure than you admitted.”
That was another problem.
Daniel’s marine-development company had lost a major project earlier that year.
He had not told Claire how serious the cash-flow squeeze became.
He had moved money from personal reserves into payroll.
He had delayed a planned house renovation.
And he had refused to sell the yacht.
Claire apparently noticed.
Daniel had told himself he was protecting her from temporary business stress.
Now he wondered what his silence had looked like from her side.
Rachel listened when he explained.
“So maybe she thought you were risking everything to keep Hannah’s yacht.”
“Yes.”
Rachel shook her head.
“That still doesn’t explain Lily.”
“No.”
Because Claire had alternatives.
Conversation.
Financial planning.
Separation.
Even an ultimatum.
Instead she chose Daniel’s six-year-old daughter.

They did not yet explain the decision.
