Chapter 4 - I Chose My Daughter Over the Brand

Lauren would not send confidential client materials casually.
She did, however, tell Ryan enough.
Three weeks earlier, Vanessa and Nicole had pitched a new content direction.
Less luxury.
More “raw family survival.”
Lauren had rejected the first version because it depended too heavily on Mia being visibly distressed.
“I told Vanessa a six-year-old cannot carry that kind of content,” Lauren said.
“What kind?”
“Discipline. Conflict. Recovery.”
Ryan stood in Allison’s driveway with the phone against his ear.
“And tomorrow?”
“I don’t know.”
“You said there was a campaign.”
“There was a pitch meeting scheduled. That’s all I can say until I speak to counsel.”
That afternoon Ryan hired a family-law attorney named Dana Whitmore.
He expected Dana to tell him how to punish Vanessa.
She did not.
She told him how to protect Mia.
Do not post accusations.
Do not publicly attack Vanessa’s business.
Do not use Mia’s statements online.
Preserve legitimate records.
Follow therapeutic guidance.
And decide where Mia would stay while Ryan and Vanessa determined whether the marriage was salvageable.
Ryan chose Allison’s house temporarily.
Then he made the decision that changed everything.
He notified Vanessa in writing that Mia could not appear in new sponsored or monetized content without his express written approval while the dispute was unresolved.
Vanessa called immediately.
“You cannot unilaterally destroy my business.”
“I’m not stopping you from working.”
“Mia is part of the brand.”
“She’s my daughter.”
“She’s my family too.”
“Then start treating her like family instead of inventory.”
Vanessa went silent.
Ryan regretted the cruelty of the word.
He did not take it back.
That night he told Mia she would not have to make videos.
Her reaction was not relief at first.
It was panic.
“But Vanessa says the house costs too much if I don’t help.”
Ryan stared at her.
“Who told you that?”
“Vanessa.”
“When?”
“A lot.”
Mia’s lip trembled.
“She said if the videos stop, we might have to leave.”
Ryan suddenly remembered something from the birthday scene.
Vanessa had not screamed when he discovered Mia crying.
She had looked frightened only after he stopped Nicole’s recording.

Maybe Mia’s humiliation had not merely become content.
Maybe the family had begun depending on it.
