Chapter 10 - Mia Was Supposed to Become Evidence
The major twist was hidden inside the sequence.
Ryan had assumed Vanessa and Nicole were humiliating Mia because humiliation made money.
They were.
But by the birthday, that strategy had begun failing.
Brands were nervous about the darker content.
Comments were turning against Vanessa.
Ordinary lifestyle posts were underperforming.
Nicole proposed a rebrand.
Vanessa would stop being the glamorous stepmother who disciplined a difficult child.
She would become the brave woman protecting a little girl inside a troubled home.
The existing videos would be reinterpreted as signs of Mia’s “emotional instability.”
Vanessa’s school contact would establish that she had privately been concerned.
Then Mia’s coached statement about Ryan hitting her would create the turning point.
The pitch deck called the proposed arc:
From Picture Perfect to Protective.
Lauren had rejected it immediately.
No brand had approved it.
But Vanessa and Nicole continued preparing pieces of the narrative anyway.
Suddenly three earlier details changed meaning.
Nicole saying, “This video is already making money.”
Vanessa telling Ryan she thought she could “control the story.”
And Mia being ordered to accuse Ryan the following day.
The birthday humiliation had two purposes.
Create another high-engagement video.
Then place Mia in an emotional state where the next day’s “disclosure” could appear spontaneous.
Ryan had to leave the room after reading the emails.
He stood outside Dana’s office staring at traffic.
He had been prepared to discover greed.
He had not been prepared to discover production planning built around destroying his relationship with his daughter.
But the twist did not make Vanessa a cartoon villain.
When confronted through counsel, she gave a different explanation.
She claimed she genuinely believed Ryan’s temper was becoming dangerous.
The campaign planning, she said, was Nicole’s attempt to turn real marital fear into content.
Nicole said the opposite.
Vanessa had wanted financial independence before leaving Ryan.
For the first time, the sisters were no longer telling the same story.
