Chapter 1 - The Birthday Video I Was Never Supposed to See

The first thing Ryan Hale saw when he stepped into the family room was frosting in his daughter’s hair.

Mia stood beside the birthday table in her green dress, crying so hard she could barely breathe.

Vanessa had one hand covered in white frosting.

Nicole had her phone aimed directly at Mia.

“Cry louder,” Vanessa said, laughing toward the camera. “Everyone loves watching me teach you a lesson.”

Ryan stopped in the doorway.

The cake lay ruined on the hardwood floor.

Nicole noticed him first.

Her phone dipped.

Vanessa turned.

Her smile vanished.

Ryan walked straight toward them, took the phone from Nicole’s hand, placed it face down on the table, and pulled Mia behind him.

“You’re using my daughter to make money?”

Vanessa immediately changed her expression.

“Ryan, you don’t understand—”

Mia clutched his shirt.

“Daddy…”

He turned.

Her face held a kind of fear he had never seen before.

“Vanessa said tomorrow I have to pretend that you hit me.”

Nobody spoke.

Ryan looked at Vanessa.

Nicole went pale.

“What did she say?” Ryan asked.

Mia started crying again.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“She’s six. She misunderstands things.”

Ryan moved Mia farther behind him.

“Don’t touch her.”

Vanessa’s eyes flashed.

“It was content. That’s all.”

Ryan stared at his wife.

For the previous three years, Vanessa had built a profitable lifestyle account around their mansion, her clothes, their marriage, and occasional family moments with Mia.

Ryan had tolerated it.

Sometimes he had even been proud of it.

But he had given Vanessa one rule.

Mia was never to be humiliated for a camera.

Now Nicole’s phone was still recording on the table.

Ryan could see the red timer running.

Nicole reached for it.

Ryan blocked her.

“No.”

Her expression changed.

Not embarrassment.

Fear.

That frightened him more than the video itself.

Because if Mia’s false accusation was supposed to happen tomorrow, then whatever Vanessa and Nicole were planning had not begun with the birthday cake.

The cake was simply the part Ryan had accidentally come home early enough to witness.
