Chapter 12 - Vanessa Finally Told Me What She Was Afraid Of

The mediation lasted seven hours.

Ryan and Vanessa sat across from each other in a neutral conference room.

Nicole was not present.

Their lawyers were nearby.

Mia was nowhere near the building.

Ryan insisted on that.

At first they discussed money.

The mansion.

Business income.

Household expenses.

Existing contracts.

Then Ryan put the real issue on the table.

“Why did you tell Mia to say I hit her?”

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“I told her we were practicing what she would say if anyone asked whether you scared her.”

“That isn’t what she remembers.”

“I know.”

“Did you tell her to say I hit her?”

Vanessa looked down.

“Yes.”

Ryan felt the answer physically.

“Why?”

She wiped her eyes.

“Because Nicole said nobody would believe emotional intimidation.”

“Were you afraid of me?”

“Sometimes.”

“Did I ever hit you?”

“No.”

“Mia?”

“No.”

“Threaten either of you?”

“No.”

“Then what were you protecting her from?”

Vanessa stared at him.

“Losing everything.”

The answer confused him.

Vanessa explained.

Months earlier Ryan had told her he wanted to reduce their lifestyle spending, refinance the mansion, and stop subsidizing her media company if it could not support itself.

Vanessa heard a warning.

Nicole heard an opportunity.

Nicole convinced her that if the marriage failed while Vanessa’s business was collapsing, she would leave with no independent identity and little leverage.

The “protective stepmother” narrative could preserve the brand.

Maybe even strengthen it.

Ryan said quietly, “So you were willing to make Mia believe her father was dangerous because you were afraid of becoming financially irrelevant.”

Vanessa began crying.

“I kept telling myself it was just a storyline.”

Ryan stared at her.

“She is not a storyline.”

“I know that now.”

“No. You knew it then.”

Vanessa did not argue.

That was the first real accountability Ryan had heard from her.

It did not repair anything.

But it ended the lie about what she had been protecting.
