Chapter 8 - Daniel Leaves His Own House

Daniel went home after midnight.

Rachel was awake in their bedroom.

“What did he tell you?”

“Enough.”

She watched him pull a duffel bag from the closet.

“You’re leaving?”

“For now.”

“Daniel, don’t be ridiculous.”

He stopped packing.

“That sentence isn’t going to work anymore.”

She stared at him.

“I made business mistakes.”

“You used my mother’s private information.”

“I didn’t steal from her.”

“You put her name on an application she didn’t understand.”

“It was never used.”

“That doesn’t make it okay.”

Rachel sat on the bed.

“You hit me in front of your parents.”

Daniel froze.

There it was.

The part he had been avoiding because Rachel’s financial misconduct was larger.

But not because his own behavior disappeared.

“You’re right.”

Rachel seemed surprised.

“I should never have hit you.”

He looked directly at her.

“What you did to my parents doesn’t excuse it. I’m responsible for that.”

Her expression shifted, searching for leverage.

“So stay and we deal with everything.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because accountability doesn’t require me to stay in a marriage I don’t trust.”

Daniel packed clothing for several days.

Then he opened the hall closet and removed a small lockbox containing household tax records, mortgage documents, and joint-account information.

Rachel stood.

“What are you doing?”

“Making copies.”

“That’s marital property.”

“So is the debt you may have hidden from me.”

He did not drain accounts.

He did not cancel cards.

He knew enough not to create another legal problem while angry.

The next morning he opened a separate checking account for his paycheck and left enough money in the joint account to cover ordinary bills until he received advice.

Then he called a family-law attorney.

Not to file for divorce that afternoon.

To understand what he was exposed to.

The answer was uncomfortable.

If Rachel had incurred business debt solely through her company, Daniel might have protections.

If household assets had been pledged, guarantees signed, or marital funds moved without his knowledge, the situation could be complicated.

“Find out exactly what exists,” the attorney said.

That afternoon Daniel received a message from Rachel.

Before you turn your father into the victim, ask him why his signature looked so easy for me to reproduce.

Daniel read it three times.

Then he called Robert.
