The truth did not make Daniel feel victorious.
It made his life administrative.
He met with a family-law attorney.
Robert met with his own counsel.
Rachel hired separate representation for the business.
A forensic accountant began reviewing Ellison House records with Rachel’s consent after her attorney explained that cooperation could matter if she hoped to negotiate with lenders.
Daniel moved into a furnished apartment near his office.
He and Rachel communicated mostly about household bills and appointments.
Neither filed immediately.
They were not ready.
That uncertainty angered Linda.
“What is there to think about?”
Daniel looked at her.
“A lot.”
“She used us.”
“I know.”
“She lied to you.”
“I know.”
“She humiliated us in your home.”
“I know that too.”
Linda stopped.
Daniel continued.
“And I hit my wife.”
Linda looked down.
He hated saying it.
But he needed the family to stop turning him into the righteous son who had simply defended his parents.
He had crossed a boundary.
He had enrolled in individual counseling because he never wanted that moment rationalized as love.
Robert supported the decision.
Linda needed more time to understand it.
Rachel, meanwhile, surprised Daniel by refusing to accuse him publicly.
Her attorney had likely advised restraint, but when one mutual friend called asking why they had separated, Rachel said only, “We both made choices we’re dealing with.”
It was the first time Daniel heard her include herself.
Then the accountant found another problem.

Not hidden offshore.
Not spent on some secret affair.
Mortgage payments.
Renovations.
Credit cards.
Car payments.
Restaurants.
