Chapter 6 - Linda’s Name Was There Too

Rachel refused to explain.
Daniel called his parents anyway.
They met that evening at Robert and Linda’s ranch house.
Linda had washed her floral blouse twice.
A faint soup stain remained near the collar.
Daniel noticed it immediately.
He hated that he noticed everything differently now.
Robert had already contacted a consumer-law attorney who handled financial fraud and elder exploitation.
Nothing dramatic happened.
No police rushed in.
No instant lawsuit was filed.
The attorney’s first advice had been simple.
Preserve documents.
Do not contact the lender recklessly.
Check credit reports.
Review account histories.
Robert slid three printed credit reports onto the kitchen table.
“There’s no loan on mine yet,” he said.
“Commercial guarantee might not show the same way.”
Daniel nodded.
Then Linda placed another page down.
Her hands were steady.
“My name is on one of the business filings.”
Daniel looked at Rachel.
She had reluctantly joined them.
“What filing?”
Linda answered.
“A vendor-credit application.”
Rachel said immediately, “That was different.”
“How?”
“You gave permission.”
Linda’s eyes narrowed.
“I gave you permission to list me as a personal reference.”
Rachel looked away.
Daniel felt sick.
The application showed Linda as “financially responsible secondary contact.”
It contained her Social Security number.
Linda pressed one finger against the page.
“I never gave you this number.”
Rachel said nothing.
Robert turned toward her.
“How did you get it?”
Daniel knew before she answered.
Rachel had helped Linda complete Medicare supplemental-insurance paperwork eighteen months earlier.
Linda had trusted her with a folder containing tax and identity documents.
Rachel whispered, “I had copies.”
Linda leaned back.
For the first time since the soup incident, she didn’t look humiliated.
She looked wounded.
“I let you help me because I thought you were my daughter.”
Rachel’s face flickered.
She seemed about to say something.
Instead, she picked up her purse.
Robert said, “If you walk out now, I’ll assume there’s more.”
Rachel paused by the doorway.
“There is.”
Daniel stood.
She turned back.
“But Robert knew enough that he doesn’t get to pretend he was completely innocent.”
Then she left.

Daniel looked at his father.
Robert did not deny it.
