Chapter 12 - Rachel Finally Stops Performing
Daniel agreed to meet Rachel at the counseling center.
Neutral room.
No parents.
No attorneys.
Just the two of them and a therapist.
Rachel arrived without makeup.
Daniel almost didn’t recognize the absence of presentation.
She sat across from him.
“Why did you throw soup at my mother?”
Rachel stared at the carpet.
“I wanted them to leave.”
“That doesn’t answer it.”
“I wanted them to never come back.”
“Why?”
Her jaw tightened.
“Because Robert had started asking questions.”
“About repayment?”
“About everything.”
She admitted Robert had emailed asking for updated financial statements.
He worried his original fifty thousand dollars was gone.
He also suspected Rachel had borrowed more.
The black envelope had arrived through a courier that morning after being forwarded from the closed office.
She had planned to hide it before the party.
Then Linda and Robert arrived early.
Rachel panicked.
“And you humiliated them.”
“Yes.”
“Because?”
“Because if your mother got hurt badly enough, she’d make him leave.”
Daniel stared at her.
Rachel’s eyes filled.
“It sounds disgusting when I say it.”
“It was disgusting when you did it.”
She nodded.
He let the silence stand.
Then he asked about the signature.
Rachel did not confess to a crime in some dramatic speech.
She explained slowly.
She had scanned forms Robert previously signed.
She reused the signature image on a guarantor page during an emergency refinancing process.
The broker assumed Robert had approved it.
Rachel did not correct him.
“I told myself I’d replace the loan before anybody knew.”
Daniel’s voice was quiet.
“You used my father as collateral for your pride.”
Rachel looked up.
“No.”
“Then what?”
“My fear.”
“That isn’t better.”
“I know.”
She started crying.
Daniel did not move toward her.
“What were you afraid of?”
Rachel wiped her face.
“That if the business failed, I’d become exactly what I spent my whole life pretending I wasn’t.”
“Which is?”
“Someone who needed people.”
For the first time, Daniel understood Rachel’s cruelty without confusing understanding with forgiveness.
