Chapter 5 - The Business That Had Already Died

Rachel came home early.
Daniel was waiting at the kitchen table.
No shouting.
No birthday mess.
No parents.
Just the black-envelope documents and his laptop.
“When did Ellison House close?”
Rachel put her purse down slowly.
“It isn’t closed.”
“The storefront is.”
“I’m restructuring.”
“For two months?”
She pulled out a chair.
“Clients stopped spending. Two projects got delayed. One contractor sued over invoices.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because you panic.”
Daniel almost laughed.
“You forged my father’s signature and I’m the one who panics?”
“I did not forge anything.”
“Then who did?”
Rachel looked toward the window.
Daniel knew his wife’s tells.
When she lied casually, she maintained eye contact.
When she was afraid, she looked toward exits.
She had done it with the envelope.
She was doing it now.
“How much debt does the company have?”
“I don’t know the exact number.”
“You own it.”
“There are different obligations.”
“How much?”
Rachel finally whispered, “A little over four hundred.”
“Four hundred thousand?”
“Not all of it is due now.”
Daniel stood.
For years Rachel had insisted their lifestyle reflected her success.
The renovated kitchen.
The luxury lease.
The private preschool deposit they had already paid for a future child before deciding they weren’t ready.
The expensive birthday dinners.
She criticized his parents for living modestly.
Meanwhile her company had been drowning.
“What happened to Dad’s fifty thousand?”
“Payroll.”
“The larger loan?”
“Operating costs.”
“Who guaranteed it?”
Rachel did not answer.
Daniel sat again.
“Rachel.”
She closed her eyes.
“Your father had stronger assets.”
Daniel stared at her.
“That isn’t what I asked.”
“I thought the company would recover before any of this mattered.”
There it was.
Not a confession.
But close enough to change the shape of the problem.
Daniel picked up his phone.
“I’m calling Dad.”
Rachel reached across the table.
“Please.”
He stopped.
It was the first sincere plea he had heard from her since the birthday.
“If Robert starts digging,” she said, “he’s going to find something that will hurt Linda too.”
May you like
Daniel lowered the phone.
“What did you do to my mother?”
