Chapter 9 - The Text Ryan Wished He Had Never Written

The case widened slowly, exactly as real problems do.

There was no dramatic arrest.

There were appointments.

Phone calls.

Forms.

A home visit.

A second interview with Mason conducted without Ryan coaching him.

The orthopedic clinic confirmed Vanessa had declined feeding-support services.

Mason’s weight loss was documented.

The school confirmed previous incidents.

Evan’s attorney requested that Chloe’s current situation be reviewed in the existing custody case.

Then Vanessa produced something of her own.

A text message from Ryan.

It was seven months old.

Ryan remembered writing it the moment he saw it.

He and Vanessa had been fighting while he sat alone in a hotel near Heathrow.

Mason had refused to let Chloe use one of Laura’s old Christmas ornaments.

Vanessa had accused Ryan of letting a dead woman control their marriage.

Angry and exhausted, Ryan had typed:

I can’t keep flying home to another fight about Laura. If Mason can’t stop making every disagreement about his mom, sometimes I feel like staying overseas would be easier.

He had regretted it ten minutes later.

Vanessa had answered:

I know. I’ll handle him.

Ryan had never imagined what “handle him” could become.

The CPS investigator did not accuse Ryan of causing Vanessa’s behavior.

But she asked the question he had been avoiding.

“Did Mason ever see this message?”

“I don’t know.”

Ryan asked him that evening.

Mason went still.

“Vanessa showed it to you?”

He nodded.

“When?”

“Before I fell.”

Ryan sat beside him.

“I wrote it.”

Mason looked at him for the first time.

“I know.”

“I was angry. I should never have said it.”

“But you meant it.”

Ryan could not offer the easy lie.

“For a few minutes, I meant that running away from the fighting sounded easier.”

Mason’s eyes filled.

“From me.”

“From everything. But you were part of everything, and that means I hurt you.”

Mason turned away.

Ryan finally understood the power Vanessa’s threat had carried.

She had not invented Mason’s deepest fear.

Ryan had handed her the words for it.
