Chapter 12 - Vanessa Finally Said What She Was Afraid Of

The confrontation happened six weeks after Ryan came home.

Not in a courtroom.

In a therapist’s conference room.

Ryan and Vanessa sat at opposite ends of a table.

Evan sat beside Chloe.

Mason chose not to attend.

Ryan respected that.

Vanessa looked thinner.

“You’ve made me sound like a monster,” she told Ryan.

“I haven’t told anybody anything you didn’t do.”

“You were never there.”

“I know.”

The answer unsettled her.

She had expected defense.

Ryan continued.

“I left you with responsibilities I should’ve shared. I avoided conflict because work was easier. That’s mine.”

Vanessa blinked.

“But starving Mason is yours.”

Her jaw tightened.

“I wasn’t starving him.”

“You withheld meals.”

“I was trying to make him stop threatening Chloe.”

“He was telling the truth.”

“He was going to hand my daughter to Evan.”

Evan leaned forward.

“Chloe isn’t property.”

“You’ve wanted to take her for years.”

“I wanted her safe.”

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Safe from me?”

Chloe spoke before anyone else could.

“Mom.”

Vanessa looked at her.

“Stop.”

That single word seemed to hurt Vanessa more than Ryan’s accusations.

Chloe’s voice shook.

“You told me if I admitted what happened, Dad would take me and you’d have nothing.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

Ryan finally saw the fear beneath all the control.

Vanessa had built her identity around being the parent Chloe chose.

Losing primary custody felt, to her, like proof she had failed at the one relationship she believed belonged entirely to her.

So she had protected that identity at Mason’s expense.

“I was scared,” Vanessa whispered.

Ryan shook his head.

“You were allowed to be scared.”

He looked directly at her.

“You were not allowed to make a ten-year-old pay for it.”

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Then Chloe said the sentence that ended any possibility of returning to how things had been.

“I don’t want to live with you until you tell the truth without blaming Mason.”
