Chapter 5 - What Vanessa Had Been Protecting

Evan called Ryan that evening.

His voice had none of the hostility Ryan expected.

Just exhaustion.

“I heard CPS contacted Vanessa.”

“They contacted me too.”

“What happened?”

Ryan told him enough.

Not every humiliating detail.

Enough.

Evan was quiet for several seconds.

Then he said, “There’s something you need to know.”

Six months earlier, Evan had asked his attorney about modifying Chloe’s parenting schedule.

Not because he wanted revenge.

Because Chloe’s behavior had been getting worse.

She had been suspended twice at his house for incidents Vanessa had dismissed as “teenage attitude.” Evan believed Chloe needed consistent counseling and boundaries.

Vanessa believed he was building a case to take her daughter.

“She thinks every problem Chloe has becomes ammunition,” Evan said.

Ryan leaned against the kitchen counter.

“So she hides the problems.”

“Yes.”

“And Mason?”

“I didn’t know he was involved.”

Ryan looked toward the family room.

Mason was asleep in the recliner with a blanket over his casts.

Evan continued.

“Vanessa told me last month Chloe was finally doing great. Said your home was proof she needed to stay primarily with her.”

The meaning came together slowly.

If Chloe had caused Mason’s injuries, Vanessa had far more to fear than Ryan’s anger.

A documented violent incident involving another child could become relevant in an already tense custody dispute.

That did not explain starving Mason.

But it explained why Vanessa might desperately want him to change a story.

Ryan called her.

She answered on the first ring.

“You called Evan.”

“Yes.”

“You had no right.”

“My son is sitting in three casts.”

“He fell.”

“Rebecca Lewis says you concealed two school incidents.”

Silence.

Then Vanessa said, “You don’t understand what Evan has been trying to do.”

“What happened at the retaining wall?”

“Ask your son.”

“I did.”

“He lies whenever he wants sympathy.”

Ryan nearly hung up.

Then Vanessa said something that stopped him.

“He was supposed to apologize to Chloe before you got home.”

“For what?”

Another pause.

“For accusing her.”

Ryan’s voice went quiet.

May you like

“Accusing her of what, Vanessa?”

She disconnected.
