Chapter 14 - The Boundary Ryan Chose Instead of Revenge

Vanessa asked to speak with Ryan one final time before their attorneys moved forward with a formal separation.

They met at a quiet coffee shop near the DuPage County courthouse.

Public enough to be safe.

Private enough to speak.

Vanessa looked exhausted.

“I corrected everything.”

“I know.”

“CPS is going to use it against me.”

“They’re going to consider it.”

“My marriage is over.”

Ryan looked at her.

“Our marriage didn’t end because you corrected your statement.”

She stared into her coffee.

“What do you want from me?”

Months earlier, Ryan might have wanted humiliation.

An apology in front of everyone.

A punishment large enough to match what he had felt when he saw spaghetti dripping from Mason’s hair.

He wanted none of that now.

“I want you to stay away from Mason unless and until the professionals working with him believe contact is appropriate.”

Vanessa nodded faintly.

“And Chloe?”

“That’s between you, Chloe, Evan, and the process you’re already in.”

“You won’t tell her I’m horrible?”

“I won’t tell her what to think about you.”

Vanessa looked up.

“After everything?”

“She’s thirteen. She needs adults who stop making her choose sides.”

Vanessa began crying.

Ryan did not comfort her.

He did not punish her either.

He simply let the consequence exist.

The legal process would take months.

Their property would have to be divided.

Their marriage would have to be untangled.

CPS would determine its findings according to its own procedures.

Chloe’s parenting schedule would remain subject to the separate family-court process.

Nothing would resolve by sunset.

Ryan stood.

Vanessa said, “Do you hate me?”

He considered the question.

“No.”

Her expression changed.

“I don’t trust you.”

That landed harder.

He left the coffee shop and drove home.

Mason was on the back patio with Diane, his right leg cast finally removed.

One arm was free.

The other would come off soon.

The broken cedar box sat on the table between them.

Mason was repairing the loose hinge.

Ryan stopped at the door.

For once, he did not rush in to help.

He waited until Mason looked up and asked for him.
