Chapter 4 - The School File Vanessa Never Mentioned
Ryan had met Chloe’s biological father, Evan Mercer, perhaps a dozen times in six years.
Their relationship was cordial in the careful way relationships become cordial when everyone knows one wrong sentence can turn into a custody argument.
Vanessa had always described Evan as controlling.
Evan described Vanessa as dramatic.
Ryan had deliberately stayed out of it.
That afternoon, Ryan made another decision he knew Vanessa would consider a betrayal.
He called Mason’s school.
The counselor, Rebecca Lewis, knew both children.
Ryan did not.
That realization embarrassed him.
Rebecca asked him to come in rather than discuss the matter casually over the phone.
She opened Chloe’s school file only after confirming the appropriate parental permissions and separating what Ryan could legally access from what he could not.
What she could discuss was enough.
Three months earlier, Chloe had been disciplined for taking a cedar keepsake box from Mason’s backpack and passing around photographs of his mother.
Two weeks later, she had shoved him into lockers after he complained.
Vanessa had attended the meeting.
Ryan had never heard about either event.
“Mason asked us not to call you overseas,” Rebecca said.
“Why?”
“He said it made things worse at home.”
Ryan looked down at the conference table.
Rebecca continued carefully.
“Vanessa told us you were aware and that the family was handling it privately.”
“I wasn’t aware.”
The counselor’s expression changed.
Not surprise.
Concern.
Ryan remembered the cedar box.
It had belonged to Laura. Mason kept her old recipe cards, photographs, a bracelet, and ticket stubs inside it.
After Ryan remarried, Vanessa had complained that the box was a shrine.
Ryan had defended Mason, but not forcefully.
“It’s his,” he had said.
Then he had gone to Dallas the next morning.
Before leaving the school, Ryan asked Rebecca one final question.
“Did Mason ever say Chloe threatened him?”
Rebecca opened her notes.
“Not Chloe.”
Ryan waited.
“He said an adult told him that families get tired of children who create problems.”
Ryan didn’t need to ask which adult.

But Rebecca added something he had not expected.
“The week before his accident, Mason asked me whether a father could legally send his own child away.”
