Chapter 7 - THE LETTER SARAH LEFT FOR AVA

Beth recovered enough to speak with Ryan in person.

They met at her apartment in Cambridge.

Ava was with a family friend.

Beth placed a thick folder on the coffee table.

“Sarah kept everything.”

Ryan stared.

“That sounds like her.”

Beth gave him a tired smile.

“She assumed someday Ava would ask.”

Inside were pediatric records.

Photographs.

School documents.

Copies of the emails Sarah sent Claire.

And one letter addressed to Ava.

Beth did not allow Ryan to read the private portions.

But she showed him a paragraph Sarah had specifically authorized Beth to share with him if contact was ever established.

Your father may not know about you. I tried once when you were coming, but I was scared of forcing my way into someone else’s life. If he ever learns, please give him the chance to decide who he wants to be before deciding who he is.

Ryan read it again.

Sarah had given him grace he had never given her.

Beth continued.

“There’s another thing.”

She removed a notarized document.

It was not a magical custody order.

It did not automatically make Ryan Ava’s guardian.

It was Sarah’s written nomination of preferred guardianship if both she and Beth became unable to care for Ava.

Ryan’s name appeared second.

After Beth.

Ryan stared.

“She wanted me?”

“She wanted Ava to have the option.”

“When was this signed?”

“Two years ago.”

“Did Claire know?”

Beth hesitated.

“Yes.”

Ryan closed his eyes.

“When?”

“I sent it to her six months ago.”

That changed the scale of Claire’s concealment.

She had not simply known Ryan might be Ava’s father.

She knew Sarah had formally expressed a wish that Ryan someday be considered part of Ava’s safety net.

Beth continued.

“I wasn't asking Claire to hand Ava to you.”

“I know.”

“I wanted contact handled slowly. Therapy. Paternity. Something responsible.”

“And she told you I wasn't ready.”

“Yes.”

Ryan leaned back.

Three earlier details suddenly made more sense.

Claire’s financial help.

Her insistence on controlling communications.

Her panic when Ava physically entered their home.

Claire had not been afraid of one conversation.

She had been afraid Ava could become part of their family permanently.

That fear had shaped every choice after Beth contacted her.

Ryan looked at the guardianship nomination.

Ava was not a threat.

She was a five-year-old whose mother had tried to leave doors open for her.

Adults had kept closing them.
