Chapter 1 - THE VOICE BEHIND THE VENT

Ryan Carter stopped in the kitchen doorway when he saw his seven-year-old son kneeling on the floor.

Ethan was tearing a dinner roll into tiny pieces.

One by one, he pushed them through the metal slats of the old wall vent beneath the breakfast nook.

“Ethan… what are you doing?”

The boy spun around.

Bread fell from his hands.

His face immediately filled with fear.

Ryan had expected an excuse.

Instead Ethan pointed toward the wall.

“She said never to tell you.”

Ryan frowned.

“Who said that?”

Ethan’s lower lip trembled.

“But the little girl is hungry.”

Ryan looked at the vent.

For several seconds he thought he had misunderstood.

“What little girl?”

Ethan pointed again.

“In there.”

Ryan crossed the kitchen.

Before he reached the vent, Claire rushed in from the hallway.

She stepped between him and the wall.

Both arms spread.

“Ryan, don’t open it.”

He stared at his wife.

Her face was not confused.

It was terrified.

“Move.”

“Please.”

“Claire.”

“You don’t understand.”

A faint sound came through the metal slats.

A child crying.

Ryan went completely still.

Claire’s breathing became frantic.

“Ryan, please listen to me first.”

He dropped to his knees.

Claire grabbed his shoulder.

He pulled away.

Then a tiny hand appeared between the slats.

Five small fingers.

Dirty at the tips.

Ethan backed against a cabinet.

Ryan leaned toward the vent.

“Hey. Can you hear me?”

The child sniffled.

Then a weak little voice came through the wall.

“Daddy?”

Ryan’s blood seemed to drain from his body.

“Help me.”

He slowly turned toward Claire.

She stepped backward.

One step.

Then another.

“Why did she call me Daddy?”

Claire’s lips parted.

Nothing came out.

Ryan looked back at the vent.

The old house had a narrow service compartment beneath the staircase, originally built around plumbing and later finished into storage.

There was an access panel on the pantry side.

Ryan knew because he had repaired the hinges himself three years earlier.

He stood.

Claire blocked him again.

“Don’t.”

This time Ryan saw something in her expression that frightened him more than the crying.

She knew exactly who was inside.

“Get out of my way.”

“Ryan, I can explain.”

“Then explain while I open the door.”

Claire grabbed his wrist.

Ethan suddenly shouted:

“Mom, she needs water!”

Ryan looked at his son.

Ethan’s eyes filled.

“She was crying last night too.”

Last night.

Ryan stared at Claire.

Not minutes.

Not an accident.

His wife had known a small child was behind that wall since at least yesterday.

Ryan pulled free.

He crossed into the pantry and reached for the concealed access panel.

Behind him, Claire whispered:

“If you open that door, our whole family changes.”

Ryan turned the latch.

“Claire.”

May you like

His voice was almost unrecognizable.

“It already did.”
