Chapter 6 - WHAT RYAN HAD TAUGHT CLAIRE ABOUT SARAH

Ryan began therapy because his attorney suggested it might help him navigate the sudden possibility of fatherhood.

He resented the suggestion.

Then went anyway.

During the second session, the therapist asked him to describe Sarah.

“Intense.”

“What does that mean?”

Ryan shrugged.

“She wanted answers immediately.”

“About?”

“Everything.”

He remembered being twenty-four.

Working seventy-hour weeks.

Dating casually.

Sarah asking where the relationship was going.

Ryan refusing to answer.

Then blaming her for asking again.

He had called her dramatic.

Needy.

Obsessive.

Those words had traveled into his relationship with Claire.

They had made Claire predisposed to distrust Sarah’s pregnancy email.

Ryan had not hidden Ava.

But he had created the version of Sarah that made hiding her easier.

That realization hurt.

He told Claire during their next mediated conversation.

“I owe Sarah something too.”

Claire looked surprised.

“What?”

“I made you think she was crazy.”

“I made my own decision.”

“Yes.”

“But I gave you the language.”

Claire stared at him.

Ryan continued.

“That does not excuse what you did.”

“I know.”

“It also doesn’t let me pretend I was some perfect man who got betrayed by two women.”

Claire’s eyes filled.

Neither spoke for a while.

Then Ryan asked about Ethan.

Their son had become quieter.

He checked kitchen vents.

He asked whether Ava had enough food now.

That broke both parents.

They arranged counseling for him.

The therapist advised them not to burden Ethan with adult details.

He needed simple truths.

Ava had needed help.

Mom made a bad decision by keeping her hidden.

Dad was making sure everybody was safe.

None of it was Ethan’s responsibility.

Claire agreed.

Then asked:

“Can I see him?”

Ryan looked at her.

Claire was still Ethan’s mother.

No court had removed her rights.

But child-welfare investigators had recommended that she temporarily avoid being alone with children while they assessed what happened with Ava.

Claire had voluntarily agreed.

“Yes.”

Ryan’s voice softened.

“With Melissa there.”

Claire nodded.

No argument.

When she saw Ethan two days later, she did not ask him to forgive her.

She crouched in front of him.

“I should never have asked you to keep a secret about another child being in trouble.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Are you mad I gave her bread?”

Claire started crying.

“No, sweetheart.”

She hugged him.

“I’m proud you knew she needed help.”

Ryan watched from the doorway.

For one painful second, Claire looked exactly like the woman he married.

That was the difficulty.

People could make terrible decisions without becoming only the worst thing they had done.

Ryan still loved her.

He no longer trusted her.

Both facts had to exist at the same time.
