Chapter 4 - THE EMAIL CLAIRE NEVER FORWARDED

Ryan did not take Ethan home that night.

He asked his sister Melissa to pick him up.

Not because Claire was automatically unsafe around their son.

Because Ryan could not trust himself to have the next conversation while Ethan was upstairs.

Claire agreed to stay at a hotel.

She did not argue.

That frightened Ryan too.

The next morning he contacted a family-law attorney.

Not to file for divorce immediately.

To understand what he could responsibly do.

The attorney told him three things.

First, Ava’s paternity needed to be established through proper consent and procedure.

Second, Beth remained Ava’s legal guardian unless a court changed that.

Third, hiding an entrusted child in a closed utility space could trigger both child-welfare and criminal scrutiny depending on the facts.

No one could promise Ryan what would happen.

Reality would move slower than his anger.

He returned home with Melissa.

Ethan sat at the kitchen table.

Scout stickers covered a notebook in front of him.

Ryan crouched beside his son.

“You’re not in trouble.”

Ethan looked at him.

“Mom said it was a secret.”

Ryan swallowed.

“How long did you know Ava was there?”

“Since yesterday.”

“Did Mom tell you who she was?”

“She said she was somebody who needed help.”

“Did she tell you not to tell me?”

Ethan nodded.

Ryan kept his voice gentle.

“That was not a fair thing to ask you.”

Ethan’s eyes filled.

“I gave her bread.”

“I know.”

“Was that bad?”

“No.”

Ryan pulled him into a hug.

“That was kind.”

After Melissa took Ethan upstairs, Ryan opened the family laptop.

Claire had left it behind.

He did not guess passwords.

They shared the device.

Her email account was already signed in.

He searched Sarah Miller.

The oldest result was nine years old.

Subject:

PLEASE LET RYAN KNOW.

Ryan clicked.

Sarah had written to Claire, not him.

I know this is awkward. Ryan and I were together shortly before you two became serious. I’m pregnant. I’m not asking him for money or a relationship. I just think he deserves to know there’s a possibility.

Ryan stopped reading.

The date was four months after he and Claire started dating.

Claire’s reply:

Ryan told me enough about your history to know you’ve done this kind of thing before. Please leave us alone.

Ryan stared at the screen.

He had never told Claire Sarah had faked a pregnancy.

Because she never had.

What he had said years earlier was that Sarah sometimes exaggerated conflict and hated being ignored.

Claire had turned that into something else.

Another email followed weeks later.

Sarah wrote:

I’m not trying to break you up. I’ll handle this myself. But if the baby is his, one day he may be angry that nobody told him.

Claire never replied.

Ryan sat alone in the quiet kitchen.

Ava had not disappeared from his life because Sarah kept her hidden.

Sarah had tried.

Claire had closed the door.

And Ryan had helped without realizing it by giving Claire an easy story about a woman he once dismissed as “too much.”
