Chapter 8 - The Cruel Rescue

Blythe asked to meet in Hale House before opening, at the table. She set a clean water glass between them and confessed. Nolan planned to force Maren's signature on a loan after the gala, then use Judith's resumed transfer as proof the family still backed him. Blythe had invited Judith, moved the dinner beneath the brightest chandelier, and told Tessa to remain close but not interrupt. She wanted Nolan's temper witnessed by people he needed to impress. "I thought he would insult her," Blythe said. "I thought shame would make her finally refuse him." Judith stared at the glass once more. "You laughed." Blythe's mouth tightened. "I made sure no one could mistake what side I appeared to be on." The cruelty had been deliberate, but not for the reason Judith believed. Blythe had tried to protect Maren by making her humiliation impossible to hide. When Nolan grabbed her hair, Blythe froze because stopping him would expose the scheme. She had used Maren's safety as bait, and called it rescue.
