Chapter 15 - The Glass Between Them
Six months later, Hale House remained open, though the private wing stayed dark and twelve workers were gone. The new operator paid insurance before suppliers and sent Judith a fixed repayment statement each month. Nolan lived across town, attended an intervention program, and spoke to Maren only through attorneys. Every apology still included the gala as an excuse. Blythe worked inventory twice a week and honored Maren's demand for no contact. Judith lost part of her retirement and stopped calling financial rescue a form of love. Maren kept the studio, returned to pediatrics, and met Judith once a month at a diner with no family history. They discussed rent, Seth's baby, work, and therapy when Maren raised it. They did not discuss forgiveness. One rainy Sunday, Judith arrived early and ordered two waters. Maren entered, hung her coat on the chair, and listened while Judith apologized. She gave no answer. Before opening the menu, Maren turned Judith's glass one quarter-turn toward her.
