Chapter 6 - No Innocent Side

Seth came to Judith's house. He did not hug Maren again. He put an insurance notice on the counter and said the restaurant had thirty days before its group plan lapsed. "Nolan says Mom and Maren hid the losses from him." Maren laughed. "Of course he does." Seth asked her to restore the transfer. Judith refused. Then he surprised them by turning on Blythe instead. "She moved the gala date, chose that table, and ordered Tessa not to interrupt family conversations. Why?" Maren looked toward the window. Judith answered for her: "Because Blythe wanted Nolan seen." Seth stepped back as if the house had tilted. His need for health coverage had made him defend Nolan, but the possibility of a setup made him trust no one. He left the notice behind and said he would not work another dinner until someone told him the whole story. Maren picked up the paper, folded it into thirds, then stopped. "He thinks there are two sides," she answered. Judith replied, "There are. Just not the two he was given."
