Chapter 4 - The Cost of Saying No
The clinic employed forty-six people.
That fact followed Evelyn home.
So did the knowledge that hundreds of older veterans depended on its transportation program to reach specialists in Colorado Springs.
For most of her adult life, Evelyn's solution to family conflict had been distance. She had deployed, transferred, worked military medical assignments, and later taken civilian contract positions far enough away that Vanessa could dominate family dinners without resistance.
Their father's illness had brought her back.
His death had made leaving harder.
Now silence carried a price too.
Evelyn notified the three independent directors that she would not approve the acquisition until the board reviewed the governance filings and clinic finances.
Within an hour, Vanessa called.
“You just put forty-six jobs at risk.”
“You promised my signature before asking me.”
“Because Dad's clinic is bleeding cash.”
“Then show me the books.”
Vanessa went quiet.
That pause bothered Evelyn more than the anger.
Two days later, the directors authorized Mara to open archived financial and compliance records.
They found no secret fortune.
They found the opposite.
Insurance reimbursements had slowed after a billing-system conversion. Two large commercial claims were under appeal. The clinic had drawn heavily on its operating line.
Vanessa had been telling the truth about the financial pressure.
But Mara found something else.
The veterans-access grant had been renewed only four months earlier.
Attached to the renewal was Evelyn's military verification.
And beside it was a representation from Vanessa stating that Evelyn remained actively involved in governance.
Evelyn read the sentence twice.

At almost the exact same time Vanessa had been telling Grant, donors, and eventually the buyer that Evelyn had never truly served and had nothing to do with the clinic, Vanessa had been telling the state the opposite.
That contradiction wasn't an old family insult anymore.
