Chapter 12 - What Each Sister Wanted

They met in the same office where Vanessa had dropped the pin into Evelyn's water.
No folder this time.
No audience except Grant and Mara.
Vanessa stayed standing.
“You want me to say I was jealous?”
“I want you to stop choosing the easiest version of what you did.”
Vanessa looked toward the window.
“Fine. I was jealous.”
The answer came without drama.
“Dad trusted you in ways he never trusted me. He talked about your deployments like they proved something about you. Then you disappeared whenever the family got ugly, and I stayed here cleaning it up.”
Evelyn absorbed that.
Vanessa continued.
“When Dad got sick, everyone called me. Staff. Banks. Patients. You got to come home and be the daughter he missed.”
“So you told people I lied about serving.”
“I made you smaller.”
Vanessa finally looked at her.
“Because if you came back as yourself, I was afraid everyone would realize they didn't need me.”
Grant shifted near the wall.
Vanessa's eyes moved to him.
“And yes. When you told me about Keystone, I knew.”
Grant's voice was quiet.
“You let me make her into a liar for years.”
“I thought if you knew who she was, you'd look at her the way you're looking at her now.”
Grant stared at her.
“This isn't about who saved me.”
“No,” he said. “It's about what you were willing to do because you were afraid.”
Evelyn touched the service pin.
Then she admitted her own part.
“I let you speak for me because correcting you meant reopening things I didn't want to remember.”
One patient had died during the same evacuation that saved Grant.
For years, Evelyn had associated praise with the person she couldn't bring home.
Silence had felt safer.
Vanessa exploited it.
Evelyn enabled it.

Neither sister could undo that now.
But one of them had moved restricted money and falsified the story of the other's role.
