Chapter 14 - The Last Signature

The board meeting began at seven on a Thursday morning.
Vanessa wore navy instead of burgundy.
Evelyn noticed because it was the first time in years her sister had entered an important room without dressing to dominate it.
The accountant presented the transfers.
Mara presented the filing inconsistencies.
The attorney explained the proposed disclosure and corrective plan.
No one shouted.
That was harder for Vanessa than anger would have been.
When the chairman asked whether she disputed the findings, Vanessa looked at Evelyn.
“If I sign, you're asking them to remove me.”
Evelyn had considered demanding exactly that.
Instead she said, “I'm asking them to decide whether you can keep managing money you hid from them.”
Vanessa swallowed.
“What do you want?”
“The clinic protected.”
Vanessa almost smiled.
“So did I.”
“You protected it from consequences. That's different.”
The chairman placed the acknowledgment in front of Vanessa.
She still didn't sign.
Grant was not in the meeting.
He had told Vanessa the night before that their engagement could not continue while she was still deciding whether truth was optional.
He had taken a room at another address.
Not as leverage.
As a boundary.
Vanessa picked up the pen.
“I hated that pin,” she said suddenly.
Evelyn said nothing.
“Every time Dad looked at it, I felt like I'd already lost some competition you never even agreed to enter.”
Then Vanessa signed.
The disclosure was transmitted to the state grant office that morning.
The buyer received corrected ownership information and withdrew its existing offer before noon.
The independent directors voted to place Vanessa on administrative leave from her managing role pending the corrective process.
She remained an owner.
She remained Evelyn's sister.
But she no longer controlled the clinic.
As Vanessa walked out, she stopped beside Evelyn.
“You finally stayed.”
May you like
Evelyn looked at her.
“So did you.”
