Chapter 1 - The Pin in the Glass

The silver-and-blue pin hit the bottom of the crystal glass with a clean, expensive clink.
Evelyn Mercer didn't flinch.
Across the dark walnut desk, her older sister Vanessa slid a blue estate folder toward her with two fingers.
“Stop pretending you served. Sign Dad’s clinic over.”
Late-afternoon light cut through the private office at Mercer Veterans Clinic in Colorado Springs, catching the wet shine of the pin underwater.
Evelyn kept her hands in her lap.
Vanessa’s fiancé, Grant Hale, had been watching with the distracted patience of a man who believed he was witnessing another old argument between sisters. A decorated combat veteran himself, he reached casually for his drink.
Then he saw the pin.
His hand stopped.
The color shifted out of his face.
Grant took Evelyn’s glass, poured the water onto the marble side table, and caught the pin in his palm.
“Where did you get this?”
Evelyn met his eyes.
She took the dripping pin from him and fastened it back to her black blouse.
“I earned it.”
Vanessa reached toward it.
Grant caught her wrist before her fingers touched Evelyn’s collar.
Not violently.
Just firmly enough that Vanessa went still.
Grant didn't even look at the woman he was supposed to marry in six weeks.
“Say the call sign.”
Evelyn waited one beat.
“Keystone.”
Grant released Vanessa.
For years, Vanessa had described her younger sister as the Mercer family embarrassment: the daughter who quit everything, disappeared overseas, came home without a career anyone could explain, and let their father support her whenever things fell apart.
But Grant was staring at Evelyn as if none of that story could possibly be true.

Vanessa understood it before Evelyn did.
Grant knew the name.
