Chapter 11 - No Innocent Sister

Evelyn drove to the cemetery the next morning.

She didn't go for guidance from her father.

She was too angry for that.

Walter had built a respected clinic and a family system that depended on one daughter taking responsibility while the other disappeared whenever family life became unbearable.

Vanessa had abused that responsibility.

Evelyn had abandoned too much of hers.

Both facts could exist at once.

Grant found Evelyn there later.

He didn't ask how she was doing.

He sat on the bench beside her and said, “I postponed the wedding.”

Evelyn turned toward him.

“That's between you and Vanessa.”

“I know.”

He looked toward Walter's headstone.

“She didn't lie to me about one thing. She built my entire understanding of your family.”

Grant had told Vanessa about Keystone years earlier.

He had described the voice he remembered from Afghanistan, the person he credited with keeping the evacuation coordinated after his convoy was hit.

Vanessa had known exactly who he meant.

She had never corrected him.

Worse, she had repeatedly told him Evelyn's claims of military service were “part of her need for attention.”

That betrayal belonged to Grant.

Evelyn refused to take ownership of it.

At the clinic, the accountant delivered another problem.

Self-disclosure might satisfy the grant administrator that the clinic was acting in good faith.

It would not magically restore the missing $186,000.

Nor would it fix the bank covenant.

Truth was necessary.

Truth was not a business plan.

The board gave Evelyn and Vanessa five days to present one.
