Chapter 9 - Erica Remembered the Night Naya Changed

Mike admitted the emotional relationship began before the separation.

He insisted there had been no sex until afterward.

Claire did not know whether to believe him.

More importantly, he tried to describe the relationship as something that “just happened.”

Naya had been angry at him over Lily.

They argued.

Then talked.

He told her things about the marriage.

Naya told him things about growing up beside Claire.

They became each other’s confidants.

Claire heard the euphemism.

An affair did not need a hotel room to alter a marriage.

But one detail still bothered her.

Why had Naya gone from wanting to expose Mike to protecting him?

Erica supplied the missing middle.

She remembered a night roughly thirteen months before Claire and Mike separated.

Naya arrived at her townhouse after 9 p.m.

She was crying.

She told Erica she had confronted Mike and demanded that he tell Claire.

Mike refused.

He said Claire would use Lily to destroy him in the divorce he was convinced was coming.

Naya told Erica she knew that was not true.

Then she said something stranger.

“My mom thinks I should stay out of it.”

Claire sat very still.

Erica continued.

Naya said their mother believed Mike was finally “doing the responsible thing” by financially supporting Lily.

Exposing him would only destabilize two children.

Erica had disagreed.

“So Mom knew before the separation.”

“Yes.”

“Did Naya say anything else?”

Erica looked uncomfortable.

“She said your mother reminded her that you’d always been stronger than she was.”

Claire frowned.

“That sounds like Mom.”

“She said you would survive a bad marriage ending. Naya apparently wouldn’t survive being blamed for ending it.”

Claire did not understand.

“Why would Naya be blamed?”

Erica shook her head.

“I asked the same thing.”

Naya refused to explain.

At the time Erica assumed she meant blame for revealing Lily.

Now Claire knew there was another possibility.

Naya already knew her feelings for Mike had crossed a line.

Their mother may have known too.

That night Claire asked her mother to come over.

No phone calls.

No group text.

Face-to-face.

Her mother arrived defensive.

Claire placed no documents on the table.

No photographs.

She asked one question.

“When Naya told you about Lily, was she already in love with Mike?”

Her mother’s expression answered before her mouth did.

Then she said the sentence that cracked the family story open.

“I told her to stay away from him.”

Claire stared at her.

Not I didn’t know.

Not That’s ridiculous.

I told her to stay away from him.

Her mother had known far more than she had admitted.
