Chapter 1 - The Question That Silenced the Baby Shower

Naya stood beside the cake table with one hand resting proudly over her pregnant belly.
Blue and pink balloons floated behind her. Relatives filled the bright suburban Columbus living room, balancing paper plates and champagne glasses while someone adjusted gifts beneath a banner near the fireplace.
Claire had already regretted coming.
Then Naya looked directly at her.
“At least my baby will have a father.”
A few relatives laughed before realizing they probably should not have.
Claire felt the insult land exactly where Naya intended it to.
Her divorce from Mike had been final fourteen months earlier. Everyone in the family knew how badly it had ended. Everyone also knew that eight months after the divorce, Naya announced she was pregnant—and that Mike was the father.
Their mother shook her head toward Claire.
“Some choices speak for themselves.”
Claire stiffened.
She had promised Daniel she would not make a scene at his aunt’s baby shower.
So she said nothing.
Her ten-year-old son did not have the same plan.
Daniel shoved his chair backward.
The legs scraped loudly against the floor.
He stepped forward and pointed toward Naya.
“Aunt Naya… should I tell everyone about Uncle Mike’s other family?”
The room changed instantly.
Naya’s smile vanished.
Mike froze beside the dessert table.
Claire saw the color drain from his face before she even understood Daniel’s words.
Guests turned toward him.
Naya stared at Daniel.
“Daniel… what are you talking about?”
Daniel did not look at her.
He stared at his father.
“You know exactly what I mean.”
Mike took one step backward.
That was when Claire became frightened.
Not because Daniel had interrupted a baby shower.
Because Mike looked like a man who had been waiting for this exact sentence.
Claire crossed the room and put a hand on Daniel’s shoulder.
“Come with me.”
Mike moved toward them.
“Claire, wait.”
She turned.
“Don’t.”
Mike stopped.
Naya had one hand on the edge of the cake table now.
Their mother was no longer glaring at Claire.
She was staring at Mike.
Claire noticed that too.
She took Daniel into the hallway and closed the door behind them.
Then she crouched in front of him.
“What other family?”
Daniel looked suddenly younger than ten.
He swallowed.
“Dad told me not to tell you.”
Claire felt something inside her drop.
“What did you see?”
Daniel glanced toward the closed door.
Then back at his mother.
“A little girl called him Dad.”
Claire did not move.
Daniel continued.
“And there was a woman there.”
Behind the door, voices had begun rising.
Claire heard Naya demand something from Mike.
Then she heard her mother say, very clearly:
“Not here.”
Claire stared at the door.
Her mother had not asked what Daniel meant.

She had told Mike not to discuss it there.
And for the first time, Claire wondered whether the secret belonged to more people than Mike.
