Chapter 7 - The Sister Claire Had Trusted Most
Claire reconstructed the last year of her marriage without looking for dramatic moments.
The ordinary ones were worse.
Mike began working later.
Naya began calling more often.
When Claire suspected Mike was hiding money, Naya told her to stop checking statements.
When Claire complained that Mike had become emotionally distant, Naya suggested counseling.
When Mike missed Daniel’s school concert, Naya sat beside Claire and held her hand.
At the time it felt like support.
Now Claire could not tell what it had been.
She found an old text thread.
Six weeks before the separation, Naya had written:
Maybe the question isn’t whether Mike loves you. Maybe it’s whether you can ever trust him again.
Claire remembered crying after reading it.
She had thought Naya was helping her confront reality.
Then another message caught her attention.
A week later:
If you left, where would you stay? Mom’s?
Why had Naya been asking about logistics before Claire had decided to leave?
Claire called Erica again.
“Did Naya ever say anything about Mike and me separating?”
Erica hesitated.
“She said Mike was terrified you’d take Daniel away.”
Claire frowned.
“I never threatened that.”
“I know.”
“How?”
“Because I asked her.”
Erica had told Naya that hiding Lily was wrong, but she also warned that exposing everything in the middle of an angry confrontation could turn both children into weapons.
Naya said she would speak with Claire carefully.
Then she stopped contacting Erica for several months.
The next time Erica saw Naya was after Claire and Mike had separated.
Naya arrived with Mike.
They were already emotionally close.
Erica noticed immediately.
“So you thought they were together?”
“I thought they were headed there.”
Claire put down the phone.
That evening she looked again at the baby-shower memory.
Naya smug beside the cake.
Mike terrified near the dessert table.
Their mother dismissing Claire.
Daniel refusing to stay quiet.
For years Claire had accepted the family’s version of her divorce:
She had become suspicious.
She had stopped trusting Mike.
She had ended the marriage.
Now the sequence looked different.
People around her had possessed information that made her suspicions reasonable.
Instead of telling her, they had repeatedly encouraged her to doubt herself.
The pattern was no longer only Mike’s secret daughter.
