Chapter 15 - The Next Baby Shower Looked Nothing Like the First

Six months later, there was no grand family party.

No balloon wall.

No relatives performing happiness for photographs.

Naya hosted a small afternoon gathering at her house for Grace’s half-birthday because an elderly aunt who had missed the birth wanted to meet her.

Claire almost declined.

Daniel wanted to go.

Lily had been invited too.

That made the decision easier.

When Claire arrived, Mike was already there, sitting on the back patio with Daniel and Lily while Grace slept against his chest.

He did not live with Naya.

He and Naya were still attending counseling separately.

Neither used the word engagement.

That future was uncertain.

But Mike was showing up for all three children openly now.

No hidden addresses.

No invented errands.

No photographs turned face-down in car doors.

Their mother greeted Claire quietly.

No advice.

No forced hug.

That was new too.

Inside, Naya stood near a dessert table.

For one second the image pulled Claire backward.

The first baby shower.

Naya’s hand over her stomach.

The cruel smile.

At least my baby will have a father.

Naya seemed to remember it at the same moment.

Her expression changed.

“I’m sorry,” she said.

Claire did not pretend not to know what she meant.

“I know.”

That was all.

Later Daniel carried two pieces of cake outside.

One for himself.

One for Lily.

Claire watched them argue over which frosting color tasted better.

Six months earlier, Daniel had been frightened that telling the truth had destroyed the family.

Now he knew something more complicated.

The family had already been damaged.

The truth had simply stopped the adults from making him live inside the damage without a name for it.

Mike still had work to do.

Naya still had consequences to live with.

Their mother still had trust to rebuild.

Claire had not returned to the role everyone once assigned her—the strong daughter who absorbed whatever the family could not handle.

She left when she wanted.

She asked questions when something did not make sense.

And she no longer apologized for either.

As Claire gathered Daniel’s jacket, Naya approached holding Grace.

“Do you want to hold her?”

Claire looked at the baby.

Then at her sister.

There were years between them now that one apology could not erase.

Claire understood that accepting the child did not mean restoring the relationship.

She held out her arms.

“For a minute.”

Naya carefully handed Grace over.

The baby opened her eyes, looked briefly toward Claire, then settled again.

Across the patio, Daniel laughed at something Lily said.

For the first time, all three of Mike’s children were in the same place, and none of them was being asked to hide another.

Whether Claire and Naya would ever become sisters in the way they had once been remained unanswered.

But when Claire left that afternoon, nobody asked her to protect a lie on the way out.
