Chapter 14 - Claire Refused to Take the Revenge Everyone Expected
Two weeks before Naya’s due date, their mother asked Claire to come to dinner.
Claire almost refused.
Then she asked who would be there.
“Just me.”
Claire went.
The baby-shower decorations were long gone.
The dining room looked ordinary again.
Her mother had placed no family photographs on the table, no sentimental objects, nothing designed to force forgiveness.
“I owe you an apology,” she said.
Claire waited.
Her mother apologized for the shower first.
Not because it was the biggest betrayal.
Because it was the most visible example of what she had done for years.
She had judged Claire publicly while privately knowing Claire had been denied essential information.
“I made you carry the shame because I thought Naya couldn’t handle it.”
Claire looked at her.
“And you thought I could?”
“Yes.”
That answer hurt more because it was honest.
Her mother had mistaken Claire’s competence for an unlimited ability to absorb damage.
Claire did not forgive her that night.
She did something harder.
She told her exactly what future contact required.
No minimizing.
No rewriting the timeline.
No asking Claire to reconcile with Naya “for the baby.”
No using Daniel to rebuild the family.
Her mother agreed.
The next morning Naya called from the hospital.
Early labor.
She did not ask Claire to come.
She only said, “I wanted you to hear it from me.”
Hours later, Mike texted Claire that Naya had delivered a healthy baby girl.
Claire stared at the message.
Her first instinct was to ignore it.
Then she thought of Daniel.
Another sibling.
Another child who had done nothing wrong.
Claire refused to repeat the adults’ pattern of making children carry consequences that belonged to their parents.
She told Daniel his aunt had delivered safely.
She did not tell him how to feel.
Later Naya sent one photograph.
A tiny sleeping baby wrapped in a hospital blanket.
