Chapter 6 - What Emily Could No Longer Pretend Was Family Loyalty

Ryan wanted to confront Lenora immediately.
Emily stopped him.
“Not while you’re like this.”
“She stole twelve years.”
“Maybe.”
He stared at her.
“Maybe?”
“We know she hid letters. We don’t know the entire custody history.”
“What else do you need?”
“The truth. Not another explosion.”
That hurt him because she was right.
He had punched Lenora three times in front of Mason.
However understandable his horror had been, violence was still violence.
Mason had watched his father lose control while supposedly protecting him.
Emily refused to romanticize that.
“You need help with your temper.”
Ryan looked offended.
“My mother had a cord around our kid.”
“Yes.”
“And I’m the problem?”
“You are not the only problem.”
She moved closer.
“But Mason needs to learn that protecting somebody does not mean you get to beat whoever scares you.”
Ryan looked away.
Later that afternoon, he called a counselor.
Not because Emily promised forgiveness.
Because she didn’t.
Meanwhile, Mason’s therapist began helping him describe what happened with Lenora.
One sentence devastated Emily.
“Grandma said Daddy never believed the other boy either.”
Emily stared at him.
“What other boy?”
“Ethan.”
Not this week.
Not one cruel afternoon.
The same threat had existed before Mason was born.
Mason explained that Lenora had shown him Ethan’s photograph several times.
Not lovingly.
As a warning.
She told him Ethan “made trouble.”
Asked too many questions.
Turned his mother against the family.
Then disappeared.
Emily’s hands went cold.
Lenora had been using a missing child from Ryan’s past to control Ryan’s current son.
When Ryan heard, he sat completely still.
Then something else surfaced.
“I remember Ethan saying Mom scared him.”
Emily looked at him.
“When?”
“Before Tessa left.”
“What did you do?”
“I told him Grandma loved him.”
The answer broke something in Ryan.
He covered his face.
“I did the same thing with Mason.”
Yes.
He had.
Every time Mason resisted visiting Lenora, Ryan told him Grandma loved him.
Every time Mason complained she was mean, Ryan called her old-fashioned.
Every time Emily said Lenora’s discipline crossed boundaries, Ryan asked her not to start another fight.
Lenora had created the pattern.
May you like
Ryan had preserved it.
Understanding that distinction became the beginning of his accountability.
