Chapter 12 - Lenora Finally Explained Why She Couldn't Let Go
Ryan agreed to meet Lenora with a family therapist present.
Emily did not attend.
Neither did Mason.
Lenora arrived furious.
“You’ve humiliated me.”
Ryan looked at her.
“I told the truth.”
“You turned Melissa against me.”
“She remembers things differently now.”
“Because your wife poisoned everyone.”
“Emily didn't know Ethan existed.”
Lenora stopped.
For a moment, the old strategy failed.
Ryan continued.
“Why did you hide Tessa’s letters?”
“She was taking you away.”
“She was asking me to see my son without you.”
“Exactly.”
There it was.
Ryan stared at her.
Lenora’s eyes filled.
“Your father left. Melissa moved out. Then you brought that girl into my house and suddenly everything I did was wrong.”
“Tessa wanted her child safe.”
“I raised that child!”
“You helped.”
“I gave up my life.”
“You always say that like it makes everyone yours.”
Lenora recoiled.
Ryan had never spoken to her that way.
He asked about Mason.
“Why scare him with Ethan?”
“Because he was snooping.”
“He’s six.”
“He needs limits.”
“You tied a cord around him.”
“I held him in place.”
Ryan’s jaw tightened.
The therapist watched him.
He breathed slowly.
“Why tell him he could disappear?”
Lenora looked away.
Then the motive emerged.
Mason had found Ethan’s photograph and asked Ryan’s sister Melissa about it.
Melissa had told him Ethan was his half-brother.
Mason kept asking questions.
Lenora panicked.
If Ryan reopened Ethan’s history, he might discover the letters.
The counseling records.
The park incident.
His own role.
And once Ryan understood what she had done to Ethan, Lenora knew he would reinterpret everything she had done to Mason.
“I was trying to keep you from destroying yourself over something you can't change,” she said.
Ryan stared at her.
“No.”
His voice remained calm.
“You were trying to keep me from changing how I see you.”
