Chapter 14 - The Answer Ethan Finally Sent

Ethan responded in late spring.

A letter.

Not a call.

Ryan sat alone before opening it.

He had learned that some moments did not require an audience.

Ethan wrote that he remembered more good things than Ryan expected.

A red wagon.

Pancakes shaped badly like dinosaurs.

Ryan letting him sit inside a parked excavator at a construction site.

A bedtime song Ryan had forgotten completely.

Then Ethan wrote about the harder memories.

Lenora telling him Tessa was selfish.

Ryan arguing with Tessa instead of listening.

Waiting for calls.

Gradually deciding not to wait.

He did not say he forgave Ryan.

He did not say he hated him.

Near the end came one request.

I’m not ready to meet you. But if Mason really knows about me, don’t make me a family secret again.

Ryan cried then.

Not because it promised reunion.

Because it demanded something concrete.

No more disappearing people to make the present comfortable.

That evening, Ryan showed Emily only the portion Ethan had explicitly said could be shared.

Then they sat down with Mason.

Ryan showed him one photograph.

“This is Ethan.”

Mason studied it.

“My brother.”

“Yes.”

“Where is he?”

“He lives with his family in Oregon.”

“Why doesn't he live with us?”

Ryan took a breath.

“Because when he was little, the adults around him made mistakes. I made some too.”

Mason considered that.

“Will he come here?”

“I don't know.”

“Can I draw him something?”

Ryan’s eyes filled.

“If he says it’s okay.”

The boundary mattered.

Ethan was not a healing device for Ryan.

He was a person.

Later, Lenora learned through Melissa that Ethan had written.

She called Ryan from an unfamiliar number after he blocked hers.

“Did he forgive you?”

Ryan closed his eyes.

“That isn't your question to ask.”

“Ryan—”

“No.”

He ended the call.

It was the first boundary with his mother that felt almost ordinary.
