Chapter 13 - The Letter Ryan Could Not Make About Himself

Ryan wrote Ethan six letters before sending one.
The first explained too much.
The second blamed Lenora too much.
The third sounded like a plea for forgiveness.
The fourth tried to prove Ryan had loved him.
The fifth sounded like a courtroom statement.
Emily read none of them.
“This needs to be yours.”
Eventually Ryan wrote three pages.
He described what he remembered honestly.
He acknowledged what he had denied.
He apologized without asking Ethan to understand his age, finances, mother, fear, or immaturity.
At the end he wrote:
You were four. I was the adult. Whatever pressure I was under, protecting our relationship was my responsibility. You don't owe me another chance because I finally understand that.
He mailed it through Tessa.
Then waited.
Not days.
Months.
During that time, the family made practical changes.
Lenora had no contact with Mason.
Ryan completed the intervention program related to the assault and continued counseling voluntarily afterward.
He and Emily began couples therapy, not reconciliation therapy.
Emily made that distinction clear.
They were deciding whether a marriage still existed worth rebuilding.
Melissa helped Ryan catalog Ethan’s old letters.
Copies were preserved.
Originals were offered to Ethan through Tessa.
Ryan kept only photographs he had a legitimate right to keep.
The blue box went into storage.
Not hidden.
Just no longer treated like Lenora’s private version of family history.
Mason stopped asking whether children could disappear when adults became angry.
His nightmares decreased.
One afternoon, he drew a picture during therapy.
Four stick figures.
Emily.
Ryan.
Mason.
And another taller boy standing far away.
The therapist asked who it was.
Mason wrote:
ETHAN MAYBE.
That word stayed with Emily.
Maybe.
The family had spent years forcing certainty where there wasn’t any.
Lenora knew best.
Tessa stole Ethan.
Ryan was helpless.
Mason was lying.
Maybe was more honest.
Maybe Ethan would answer.
Maybe he would not.
Maybe Emily would stay married.
May you like
Maybe Lenora would change.
Nobody got to control those answers anymore.
