Chapter 11 - The Cost of Finally Seeing the Pattern
Emily moved Mason into her sister’s house for three weeks.
Not because she believed Ryan would hurt their son.
Because she needed distance.
Ryan accepted it.
That mattered.
“You’re punishing me for what I did at twenty-three,” he said once.
Emily shook her head.
“No. I’m deciding what today tells me.”
“What does it tell you?”
“That when you’re afraid, you become whoever the strongest person in the room needs you to be.”
Ryan had no defense.
With Ethan, it had been Lenora.
With Mason, Lenora again.
In the hallway, Ryan’s fear had transformed into violence.
Emily needed to know whether he could become a father who protected without exploding.
Ryan’s counseling became less about anger and more about dependency.
Lenora had raised him after his father left.
Every disagreement came wrapped in sacrifice.
After everything I did for you.
I stayed.
I paid.
I helped.
Love and debt had become indistinguishable.
Ryan began recognizing how often he had allowed guilt to make decisions.
Meanwhile, Mason asked difficult questions.
“Is Ethan my brother?”
“Yes,” Emily said.
“Will I meet him?”
“We don’t know.”
“Does he hate Daddy?”
Emily chose her words carefully.
“He has reasons to be hurt.”
Mason thought about that.
“Daddy was bad?”
“Daddy made bad choices.”
“Grandma too?”
“Yes.”
Mason leaned against her.
“Am I bad because Grandma said our family is cursed?”
Emily pulled him close.
“No.”
That answer required no qualification.
Ryan later apologized to Mason for what he had witnessed.
Not only Lenora’s behavior.
His own.
“I should have moved you away and gotten help,” he said. “I shouldn't have hit Grandma.”
Mason stared at him.
“But she was hurting me.”
“Yes.”
“Then why can't you punch her?”
“Because keeping you safe and hurting someone back are different things.”
Mason seemed unconvinced.
He was six.
