Chapter 9 - The Story Margaret Needed Everyone to Believe
Margaret began attending Sunday services at St. Matthew Lutheran with Allison.
She told members of the women’s group that Clara had suffered a postpartum episode and become paranoid. Several women had brought meals to Ethan and Clara after Noah’s birth. Margaret claimed Clara had refused them.
One of them called Clara.
“I don’t want to pry,” Mrs. Hanley said, “but Margaret told us not to contact you directly.”
“When?”
“The day before you came home from the hospital.”
Clara closed her eyes.
Margaret had not merely removed help after arriving. She had cleared the space before Clara returned.
Ethan called his mother.
Clara sat across from him in the counselor’s waiting room and heard only his side.
“You do not discuss Clara’s health.”
A pause.
“No, she did not have a breakdown.”
Another pause.
“I watched you pull her off the couch.”
His voice cracked on the final sentence.
When he hung up, he looked older.
“She says I betrayed her.”
“You did.”
He looked at Clara.
“So did I.”
Their counselor, Dr. Elaine Brooks, asked Ethan to write a complete timeline of every conversation with Margaret beginning three months before Noah’s birth.
He resisted at first.
Then he produced seventeen pages.
The timeline showed Margaret had offered money in April. She asked about forwarding mail in May. Ethan agreed she could use the guest room “until Christmas” in early June.
Noah was born in August.
Clara stared at the date.
“Until Christmas is not a few days.”
Ethan rubbed his forehead.
“I shortened it every time you asked.”
Dr. Brooks said, “Why?”
“Because the full answer sounded worse.”
Clara turned another page.
One week before delivery, Ethan had emailed Margaret a list of house rules. The final line read:
Clara may be emotional at first. Don’t let her make permanent decisions while she’s exhausted.
Clara read it aloud.
Ethan’s face drained of color.

She finally understood why Margaret had ignored every request Clara made.
Ethan had warned her in advance that Clara’s decisions did not count.
