Chapter 8 - The Lease in Clara’s Name

Naomi’s house was already full.

Her husband worked nights. Their two teenagers had surrendered the basement couch without complaint, but Clara heard them whispering about missed rides and crying babies.

She could not turn one family’s kindness into another permanent arrangement.

Clara used part of her remaining savings to rent a furnished two-bedroom apartment in Lombard for three months.

The decision cost more than money.

It told Ethan she was not returning home soon.

He stood in the empty living room while Naomi assembled a bassinet.

“You signed a lease?”

“Month-to-month after ninety days.”

“You could’ve stayed at the house. I changed the locks.”

“The lock wasn’t the only problem.”

“I’m not asking Mom back.”

“You’re still acting like this is about whether she returns.”

“What else do you want me to do?”

“Tell the truth without waiting for me to discover it.”

Ethan paced toward the window.

“I borrowed money because I thought we could lose the house.”

“Were we in foreclosure?”

“No.”

“Had we missed mortgage payments?”

“Two were late.”

“Then we had a serious problem. We didn’t have an emergency requiring you to trade away my privacy.”

“I didn’t trade you.”

“You promised another adult access to my recovery, my baby, and my home.”

He stopped pacing.

“I was going to tell you after you were settled.”

“After I had given birth and couldn’t easily leave.”

The words landed harder than Clara expected.

Ethan sat on the floor beside an unopened box.

“My dad lost his job when I was fourteen. We spent six months pretending everything was normal while my mother sold jewelry and borrowed from relatives. One morning the bank changed the locks.”

Clara knew the family had lost a house. She had never heard the details.

“I saw the mortgage fall behind,” Ethan continued. “I thought if I told you, you’d panic. Then Mom offered money and childcare. I told myself it was temporary.”

“You were protecting yourself from my reaction.”

“I was protecting us.”

“No. You were controlling the information so you could control the outcome.”

Ethan looked toward the bassinet.

“What happens now?”

“You keep seeing Noah. We meet with a counselor. We separate the finances.”

“And our marriage?”

Clara picked up the apartment keys.

“That depends on whether you’re finally more afraid of lying than you are of losing control.”
