Chapter 1 - The Dinner She Couldn’t Finish

Margaret Cole had one hand twisted in Clara’s pink robe when Ethan walked through the front door.
“Get up and finish my dinner.”
Clara’s knees folded before her feet found the floor. She slid from the couch, one arm wrapping instinctively around her abdomen. Two days after giving birth, her face was colorless beneath damp strands of brown hair.
Their newborn screamed from Margaret’s arms.
Ethan dropped the pharmacy bag.
“Mom!”
He crossed the dining room in three strides, caught Clara beneath the shoulders, and pulled her away. Margaret nearly lost her grip on the baby, then tightened both arms around him as though Ethan were the danger.
“Don’t be dramatic,” she said. “Only weak women collapse after birth.”
Clara tried to speak, but her breath came in shallow pulls.
“She wouldn’t let me rest.”
A half-carved roast sat on the table beside mashed potatoes and glazed carrots. Margaret’s place setting was the only one being used. She had poured herself iced tea while Clara cooked.
Ethan took the baby from her.
Margaret reached after him. “Give me Noah. You’re upsetting him.”
Ethan stepped between his mother and Clara.
“No.”
His anger vanished so suddenly that Margaret stopped moving. He looked toward the hallway, where two unfamiliar suitcases stood beside the guest-room door.
A stack of forwarded mail rested on the entry table.
Every envelope carried Margaret’s name.
Every envelope carried Ethan and Clara’s address.
Ethan turned back to his mother.
“Tell Clara why you really came.”
Margaret’s mouth tightened.
Clara looked from the suitcases to her husband.
“What does he mean?”
Margaret stared at Ethan, waiting for him to protect her.

When he didn’t, she said, “I came because your husband made me a promise.”
Then Clara’s eyes rolled back, and her body went limp in Ethan’s arms.
