Chapter 14 - The Last Offer Before the Boundary

Sunday lunch was held in Aunt Patricia’s split-level home in Carol Stream.
Margaret sat at the head of the dining table.
Ethan noticed the arrangement immediately. His mother had placed herself where his late father used to sit during holidays.
Allison, Patricia, two cousins, and three older relatives crowded around the table. Clara remained at the apartment with Noah.
Margaret began before anyone finished serving food.
“My son has been manipulated into abandoning me.”
Ethan placed the folder beside his plate.
“No.”
Margaret’s eyes narrowed.
He explained the arrangement he had made without Clara’s consent. He admitted accepting money, canceling childcare, and telling Margaret that Clara’s decisions could be ignored after delivery.
Then he described walking in while Margaret dragged Clara from the couch.
Margaret interrupted.
“She was conscious.”
“She lost consciousness because you forced her to cook.”
“She needed to eat.”
“You were the only person eating.”
Ethan passed around the physician’s letter, cancellation records, and Allison’s printed message.
Nobody raised their voice.
The lack of chaos gave Margaret nowhere to hide.
Aunt Patricia removed her glasses.
“You told me Clara had postpartum psychosis.”
“I said she was emotional.”
“You said her doctor didn’t trust her with the baby.”
Margaret pressed her napkin against the table.
“I may have repeated what Ethan implied.”
Ethan shook his head.
“No. That part was yours.”
He gave her one final opportunity.
“Correct what you said to the church and the family. Stop contacting Clara. Attend counseling. I’ll continue repaying the money and help you find housing.”
Margaret looked around the table, searching for the familiar faces that had always rescued her from consequences.
“And if I refuse?”
“You won’t see Noah.”
“You can’t keep my grandson from me.”
“I can keep my child away from someone who abused his mother.”
Margaret stood so quickly her chair scraped the floor.
“You’ll regret choosing a temporary marriage over blood.”
Ethan did not stand.

“My marriage became temporary because I chose blood over honesty.”
He opened the family group chat and began typing the correction Margaret had refused to write.
