Chapter 12 - What Margaret Called Strength

Margaret agreed to one meeting because Allison threatened to stop housing her.
They met in Dr. Brooks’s office.
Clara sat nearest the door. Ethan sat beside her but left several inches between their chairs. Margaret chose the seat across the room.
She looked at Clara’s pink blouse.
“You always dress like nothing happened.”
Clara almost laughed.
“What would you prefer?”
“A little gratitude.”
“For what?”
“For keeping that household running while you lay on a couch.”
“I had given birth forty-eight hours earlier.”
“So had millions of women.”
Ethan leaned forward.
“You pulled her up by her robe.”
“She refused to move.”
“She was medically anemic.”
“I didn’t know.”
“You didn’t ask.”
Margaret turned on him.
“You begged me to help. You said she was emotional and the bills were out of control.”
“I was wrong.”
“No. You were scared, and I solved the problem.”
“You became another problem.”
Margaret’s face changed.
For the first time, Clara saw the fear beneath the contempt.
Margaret had spent forty years defining herself through usefulness. She managed her husband’s business, raised two children, cared for her mother, and organized every family emergency. After her husband died and Ethan built a life outside her home, she no longer knew who she was when nobody needed her.
“I wasn’t going to sit alone in an apartment waiting for one of you to remember I existed,” she said.
Clara answered quietly.
“You could have asked for a relationship.”
“I offered more than that.”
“You purchased access.”
“I gave you money when your own husband couldn’t provide.”
Ethan stood.
“That’s enough.”
Margaret looked at him with naked disbelief.
“You let her make you ashamed of your family.”
“No. I’m ashamed of what I allowed.”
Margaret gathered her purse.
At the door, she turned to Clara.
“You think you won because he’s choosing you now. Men come back to the women who raised them when wives stop making life comfortable.”
Then she revealed the lie she had continued spreading.
“I already told everyone you’re keeping Noah from me because your doctor thinks you’re unstable.”
Clara looked at Ethan.

The private betrayal had become a public attack on her ability to mother.
This time, they would not answer it privately.
