He was not fired.

Melissa increased her work hours.
The household budget tightened immediately.
The refinanced mortgage had both their names on it.
Separating from Gary was not as simple as changing locks.
That reality softened Brooke’s view of her mother without excusing her choices.
Fear could explain why people stayed.
It could not make staying harmless.
